Monday was so exciting with the announcement of the Youth Media Awards and all the diversity and the cross-overs between the awards! I know everyone out there is talking about it, sharing it, analyzing it, and wondering what it means for the future. Before I head that way (and I will next week, no worries),
I want to talk about the SuperBowl Half Time Show.
Yes, I know. If you’ve seen it, you either love it or hate it; if you haven’t seen it, take a look.
But, why in the world do you need to talk about it, when there are so may other things to talk about? Like the PRINTZ WINNER and an HONOR book being GLBTQ books?!
Or a PRINTZ HONOR and the CALDECOTT WINNER being the SAME BOOK?
BECAUSE, if you look beyond the face value of it, it’s HUNGER GAMES FAN FICTION.
I’ll wait for your jaw to come off the floor. Now, take a look again at the video with this in mind. If the 50 Shades of Grey series can capture the minds of everyone, be romantic and wonderful, and it’s Twilight fan fiction, then this is not so hard, and it’s so much better. Ready for the story?
Every year, the world demands that the society of musical artists give up one of their own in a performance sacrifice for the masses, and the expectations of the performance spectacle grow every year. They must reign in their artistic devices to fit within the confines of broadcast media and appeal to the general tastes of the viewing public at large, no matter who the tribute and their genre of music may be, and they know that no matter what they do and how things go, they will be ripped to shreds for their work and time. Additionally, they will be performing in the middle of the title battle of the factions, who have beaten every other challenge and are fighting for legitimacy and the right for jewelry, millions of dollars, and most important, the trip to Disney World.
Debate amongst the artist class begins, and past performances
and the agony of failure are relived among its survivors.
Finally, a tribute emerges.
Months go into the planning and rehearsals for the tribute’s performance, and everything else in their life goes on hold. Their costume designers and support team are around them non-stop, and advice from former survivors comes in as well. Then finally, it begins.
The tribute enters the arena showing that she is
THE GIRL ON FIRE and NOTHING WILL TAKE HER DOWN.
She’s a pawn of everyone: the media, the viewers, and she’s subject to their rules and their games…
…but then, CINNA becomes her trusted adviser,
and he braves the games and risks his anonymity in order to back her.
Yet, the Capitol and the controller of the games can’t handle this, so they decide to send in tracker jackers to make her lose her way, and she gets lost fighting the venom and its hallucinatory effects, thinking that Peeta and all her other supporters are dancing sharks, palm trees, surf boards, and beach balls with weird teeth.
Willing to do anything to defeat the Capital, she joins with the “new regime,”
and tries to be the good soldier and follow orders for their side.
Recovering from the venom, the tribute and her army now
storm the stadium in order to gain freedom for all!
from MTV
Destroying both the old president and the new who wanted the same system in place,
the tribute takes time to mourn those lost in the battle.
Deciding not to be used anymore by ANYONE for their needs or desires,
the tribute leaves on a star as a reminder to future generations…
…because THE MORE YOU KNOW.
and on an island far away, quite happy and content…
