In 2010, Texas became the first state to have a librarian created (and state library association sponsored) graphic novel list. The Texas Maverick graphic novel list is an annual bibliography that encourages kids in grades 6th through 12th to explore the graphic novel format, and as such the librarians on the committee search for the best in the genre to encourage that exploration.
Now, 5 years later, the Children’s Round Table of the Texas Library Association is breaking ground again, and launching the Little Mavericks- an annual list of recommended graphic novels for youth in grades Pre-K through 5th grade. The committee will be introduced at the Texas Library Association Annual Conference in Austin, and the first list will be released in 2016.
I get to be completely excited about it for a few reasons.
A. I’ve been completely into graphic novels and comics FOR-EVAH, and could go on for days on various series.
B. I’ve been hugely supportive of the Mavericks committee and their efforts since they’ve started, and been so happy that they’ve done such amazing things.
C. I have the honor of being on the inaugural committee of The Little Mavericks.
Wondering what would be graphic novels for this age group? ALSC has recommended lists available. Here are a few that my kids really love.
